It’s been hard to write lately — or more accurately it’s been hard to publish. The world feels heavy and complicated in ways that often, counter-intuitively, tend to inspire me to new ideas. But while I have, in fact, been writing, the painful state of the conflict in the Middle East combined with the pure dysfunction in domestic politics has left me feeling that I don’t have enough coherence or usefulness to share the work I’ve been doing to try to make sense of things. I remain committed to my promise to avoid adding more pure analysis or diagnosis to a world that has plenty of both without offering at least some sense of direction or solution. So rather than contribute nothing while I wrestle with my own thoughts and words in a moment where we are all craving words and inspiration that might help us, I want to at least share some leadership from others that I am leaning on to make sense of things starting with a piece from yesterday from Kate Catherall (a dear friend who has also struggled to write and publish lately) on expanding our circle of concern. It is deeply personal, careful, nuanced, and not afraid of expressing pain despite the uncertainty of how to manage it — all things we need more of right now. I promise it’s worth your time.
More to come from more voices.
